Rongowhakaata have exercised mana and rangatiratanga from time to time over the region that included Te Toka a Ahuru in the north, overlapping with the interest of Te Aitanga a Hauiti; to the south at Pakowhai, Muriwai and on to Te Kuri a Paoa, overlapping with Ngai Tamanuhiri. In the west the interests of Rongowhakaata extend to the Tahora blocks, overlapping with Tuhoe and Te Aitanga a Mahaki. The interests of Rongowhakaata also overlap with Te Aitanga a Mahaki at Patutahi. To the southwest, the associations of Rongowhakaata extended to Te Reinga, overlapping with Ngati Ruapani and Ngati Kahungunu.
